The Startling Appearance...And What Could This Mean, Folks?

As Miko walked ahead through the thickets of trees, she came across an old cottage. It was a little run-down and scary, but she had been investigating homicides with her father ever since she was five. This cottage seemed like nothing compared to what she had seen in New York City. She was glad that there were no pools of blood.
Josh whined. "It's okay, buddy," Miko said, bending down to scratch him behind the ears. But she knew that dogs sensed strange things that humans can't. Something here was troubling her otherwise brave little German shepherd.
She stepped inside. Could she find Evan Fife in here? But before she could even walk ahead, a dark hood was thrown over her head and her shoulders were grabbed by someone. She didn't scream, but she called for Josh. He barked and tried to ram into her kidnapper (or so), but the person shooed him away. Miko took the distraction to throw the hood aside. A boy, not much older than she was, stood at the door.
"Who're you?" she asked him.
The boy snorted, and a face, an all-too-familiar face, the face who she had been searching for with the magical kids, the face who was the son of the parents who sold the house that she and her family now lived in Coronel Cove, came into her view. Was it really Evan?
"Who d'ya think it is, Miko Myelin?"
